Roger Chambers was an active participant in the formation of EXPO - truly believing in the concept of education as developing the whole child and that each child had gifts which they brought to the process. His son Bryn was a member of one of the first classes to have started in K and graduated from EXPO at the end of 6th grade. His daughter Erin followed. Roger was active parent at EXPO, having served on the early site councils and planning committees at the school. In the late 1990s he spearheaded a fund raising drive which resulted in over $7,000 in donations designated for books for our school. He undertook a two year study to start a PTA/PTO program at EXPO. He believed that there should be more than a Site Council for organized parental involvement opportunities at the school. When he saw something that he felt needed changing, he actively pursued the discussion. Not only was Roger a critical piece in the development of EXPO over the years, but he also was an ardent supporter of public schools in St. Paul. I am aware of one district wide committee he served on for several years - the Citizens Budget Advisory Committee. His knowledge of the district budgeting process was critical in the Site Council understanding of funding issues effecting EXPO. Roger was a known figure at the district level, which was acknowledged at his funeral by the attendance of several district personnel and school board members. Roger was a quiet man - he had views which he expressed openly. But was not just a complainer. He offered suggestions for improvement, researched alternatives and was willing to do the work. This is the type of volunteer any organization needs to keep growing. Roger's energy and enthusiasm for educating our children in the best ways possible, the EXPO way, were the seeds of our wonderful program.
